Regularly Test the Soft Water Chloride Ion to Monitor the Operation of the Sodium Ion Exchange Machine

As we all know, the water of industrial boilers or the soft water used in other production processes are replaced by sodium ion exchange machine. Therefore, whether the sodium ion exchanger is operating normally has a significant impact on the safe operation and energy saving of the boiler. During the inspection, we found that the laboratory staff of some units only paid attention to the hardness and alkalinity of the test water, but did not pay enough attention to the salt consumption and operating conditions of the sodium ion exchange machine. The above-mentioned problems can be solved more conveniently by regularly testing the chloride ion content of soft water and raw water and comparing them.

Ⅰ. The four stages of sodium ion exchange machine during operation

When the sodium ion exchange machine is operating normally, it is divided into four stages. Namely: normal operation, backwashing, regeneration and flushing. In order to reduce salt consumption, the concentration of salt solution used for sodium ion exchanger regeneration is generally 10%. If the concentration of the salt solution is too high, the salt solution will be wasted, causing unnecessary economic losses. However, the concentration of the salt solution is too low to achieve the purpose of the replacement reaction, and the calcium and magnesium ions in the resin cannot be replaced, and the purpose of reducing the hardness of the raw water cannot be achieved. This is a problem that should be paid attention to during the use of the sodium ion exchange machine. In order to ensure the reliable operation of the sodium ion exchange machine, it is necessary to regularly test the chloride ion content of the sodium ion exchange machine effluent during operation and compare it with the chloride ion content in the raw water, because the chloride ion in the softened water at the outlet of the sodium ion exchange machine. The content is generally equal to or slightly higher than the chloride ion content of the raw water. If the chloride ion content of the softened water is abnormally greater than that of the raw water, it indicates that there is a problem with the sodium ion exchange machine, referred to as “salt leakage”.

Ⅱ. Reasons of “salt leakage” in using ion exchange machine

During the inspection process, we discovered that there are three main reasons for the occurrence of “salt leakage”:

  1. There is a problem with the “positive washing” procedure in the operation of the sodium ion exchanger, which causes the salt solution remaining in the regeneration process to not be washed clean.

  1. The filter screen or filter cap of the resin tank of the sodium ion exchanger is damaged.

  1. The “center valve” or “salt valve” of the automatic sodium ion exchanger is worn out, and water leakage occurs. Therefore, the sodium ion exchanger needs to be adjusted and repaired immediately. If necessary, replace the filter screen or filter cap of the sodium ion exchanger and other accessories; check whether there are scratches on the salt valve and cause the salt solution to leak into the soft water.

As people pay more attention to energy conservation and environmental protection, the energy conservation of boilers has also attracted increasing attention. And to do a good job of water quality treatment is the prerequisite for boiler scale prevention and energy saving. There is evidence that for a boiler with a working pressure of 1.4mpa, due to 1mm of mixed scale on the heating surface, up to 8% of fuel was wasted. Therefore, ensuring the normal operation of the sodium ion exchanger and reducing the salt consumption as much as possible is an increasingly important link that cannot be ignored in the operation of the boiler.
