Creative Proteomics Provides Short Chain Fatty Acids Analysis Service to Accelerate the Research

The company has recently launched a short-chain fatty acid analysis service to help accelerate research on the physiological roles of short-chain fatty acids in a variety of cellular and molecular systems, such as affecting immune regulation, inhibiting the production of anti-inflammatory factors, blocking tumor cell proliferation, and controlling proto-oncogene expression.

Short-chain fatty acids (SCFA) are organic fatty acids with a carbon atomic number of 2 to 6, mainly including acetic acid, propionic acid, butyric acid, isobutyric acid, valeric acid, iso-valeric acid, caproic acid, and iso-caproic acid. SCFA is produced primarily by the digestion of indigestible sugars such as dietary fiber, resistant starch, and oligosaccharides in the colon by lactic acid bacteria, bifidobacteria and other beneficial bacteria. Acetic acid, propionic acid, and butyric acid have the highest content in biological samples, which account for more than 85% of SCFA.

SCFA has a variety of important biological functions in organisms. The main functions are:

  1. Provide energy: SCFA can provide energy for colon cells, mucosal epithelial cells, and muscles. Among them, the glucose produced by propionic acid in gluconeogenesis can meet 30%-50% of the energy requirements of animals. Butyric acid is converted into ß-hydroxybutyric acid to provide energy for the body. Acetic acid, propionic acid and butyric acid can be used as important energy sources after being absorbed by intestinal mucosal epithelial cells.

    3. Improve intestinal blood circulation
    4. Stimulate the secretion of gastrointestinal hormones (such as gastrin and motilin)
    5. Regulate gene expression

The concentration of SCFA can be quantified by combining gas chromatography (GC) with other techniques.
